100 Years Etania

100 Years Etania

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the Etania Charitable Organisation documented its eventful history in a beautifully illustrated commemorative book. Shortly after its foundation in 1917, the organisation bought Etania Haus which became a sanitorium for Jewish patients with pulmonary diseases. After the Second world War, Etania Haus also welcomed survivors of the Holocaust. The sanitorium was run successfully and with high rates of recovery among its patients until the 1960s when the steady success of drug-based therapy for pulmonary tuberculosis led to a decline in visiting patients and finally resulted in the temporary closure of the Etania Haus in the year 2000. The Etania Haus was, however, reopened in 2014 under a new name; Zentrum Haus and since then has been operated by the Verein für Kranke und Erholungsbedürftige (www.chaimvshalvah.org), which remains faithful to the original purpose of the Etania Charitable Organisation.
